Lady Gaga’s Boundary-Pushing Fashion

Lady Gaga Fashion

Lady gaga fashion, celebrity fashionLady Gaga has long set the record for outlandish, wild and outrageous outfits. Her millions of fans, referred to as Little Monsters, adore her style, consider her inspiring and admire her for being different. Others consider her extreme and she has received criticism and backlash from critics and other media outlets. Regardless of your personal opinion, Time magazine placed the icon on its “All Time Top 100 Fashion Icons” list in 2015 and Forbes included her on its “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” list from 2013-2015. Gaga prides herself in being unique and keeping the public guessing.

Although she has the influence of many top designers, many of Gaga’s famous outfits are to convey a message. Her famous meat dress, composed completely of raw meat, worn at the 2015 MTV awards has been named one of the top fashion statements of all time. The message was to express her support for homosexuals in the military and her disappointment in the don’t ask, don’t tell policy.

In her own words, Gaga explained that the statement was to fight for what one believes in and in her own words, “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones and I am not a piece of meat.” Although met with a lot of controversy, especially by animal rights activists, the dress was preserved by a taxidermist and went on to be displayed at the 2015 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as well as the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. along with an explanation of her political message. No matter what you think of her politics or her fashion, it can’t be denied that Lady Gaga’s flamboyant outfits make a statement and she has left her (mark/stamp) on society.…

Fur In Fashion Is Here To Stay

Probably one of the most controversial trends this season will be exotic furs, both real and faux (synthetic). While animal activists would prefer you wear faux, many people still prefer to wear genuine. No matter how controversial, designers will probably always use animals’ skin and fur for their shoes, clothing, and accessories.

In the Milan Fashion Show for 2015, there were many fur designs, showing that fur was big for 2015. The biggest trend is mixing furs. This works best with a monochrome colour palette, even complementary colours. Mixed furs allow for a great visual display.

Another great trend for 2015 is fur placement. That is, placing fur on an otherwise furless piece. This is when fur is placed in unconventional places. Designers are loving this trend, and you can expect to see more from designers in the coming season.

Fur Dresses

Another great trend in fur is colour blocking. Not only is it top/bottom or left/right colour blocking, but it is actually being used in geometric designs as well. It is a universal trend and can be used in a variety of pieces for men and women. High colour contrasts in fur makes these looks great for daywear, career wear, and nightlife.

Whatever look you are going for, fur can be used to achieve that extra oomph. As mentioned earlier, you can get these looks with faux fur as well. When purchasing a fur piece, you can opt to look for only faux fur designers, as they do exist. However, be warned, some designers say that they use faux fur, but actually use real fur, which are sometimes canine hide. Be sure to always do a little research before the purchase.

No matter if you want genuine or synthetic fur, you should do your homework and know what you are buying before. You want high quality, no matter if it is real or faux. Nevertheless, fur in fashion is here to stay, so have fun with it in your wardrobe.

Style My Space Update!

Another update from Naomi Coe and Gerri Panebianco of Little Crown Interiors on Jill, our Style My Space winner!

digital nursery

Little Crown Interiors:

Hello again!  We first introduced this Modern, unisex Digital Nursery Design in a previous post – Part 1 – where we shared with you the “before” photos and nursery floor plan.  Now it’s time to move on to the best part: the stuff.  Please keep in mind that we were able to create the entire design remotely – Jill, the homeowner, is in New York, so without meeting face-to-face, our exclusive design methods allowed us to create the perfect design for her!

Jill informed us that she is not finding out the sex of the baby, and that she has modern taste.  She also liked this Oeuf Sparrow Crib.  The combination of these ideas created our design inspiration.

Next, we went to work on the colour scheme – which turned to be the very unusual palette of grey with accents of plum, coral red and turquoise.

Finally, we started choosing the furniture, artwork, accessories and lighting.  Here are just a few of the items we chose for Jill’s Nursery Interior Design.

While it might be tough to imagine how all these things will work together, we promise – this is a very chic design.  Plus, our next post will feature a rendering of Jill’s room – so you can see how everything will look!

That’s it for now…  Be sure to check back regularly to see the progress of this gender neutral baby room, and to get expert design tips from Naomi Coe and Gerri Panebianco of Little Crown Interiors, who will guest-blogging through the entire progress of their interior design of Jill’s nursery.  Love the choices so far – especially the vintage map!

Love Lids and more from eecee bb!

For quite a few months now, I have been corresponding with Beth Bogle, designer behind eecee bb, about her fabulous, quirky line of clothing for children.  What initially caught my eye about Beth’s designs was her way of assembling Love Lids, like the one above, with rough edges showing.  And who isn’t drawn to pure cashmere!

This Love Lid is the same as the one above – it can be worn in multiple ways to show off its many colours.  My son liked the seam in the front!

eecee bb (prounounced like it’s spelled) stands for the French “ici” meaning “here,” and as Beth states, “embraces the immediacy of imagination and the place where life unfolds.”

Beth, like many of the designers I’ve met, has an interesting combination of education and experience that led her to designing children’s clothing.  With a background in fine art, design and merchandising, and teaching art and French to children, Beth launched eecee bb in 2006, based in Minnesota.  Love the photo of Beth, above, and her rack full of creations!

The most exciting part of our blog, in my opinion, is what Beth calls Child Enlightened Design.  This collaborative process involves your child every step of the way in designing his or her clothing – from the design book to fabric choices to adding custom artwork!  I would have absolutely loved this process as a child – or now even!  See the collaborative process below.

Collaborative design doesn’t have to be done in Beth’s studio, either.  Contact Beth to inquire about custom design kits!  What a great gift a design kit would be…and did I mention Beth now creates flower girl skirts and cashmere tops for weddings and other special occasions?  Thanks, Beth, we look forward to seeing more designs soon!  Here are just some of our favourites…it was difficult to choose!

A Modern, Gender Neutral Nursery Design for the Style My Space Winner!

When Naomi Coe and Gerri Panebianco of Little Crown Interiors agreed to offer one lucky reader their digital design services, I was thrilled to say the least!  I hope you’ve enjoyed being along for the ride – shadowing Naomi and Gerri in putting together a cohesive, well-planned nursery from the ground up.  Take a peek at the finished designs for our winner!

Little Crown Interiors:

Hello again!  We shared our modern, unisex Digital Nursery Design for Jill Stein, the “Style My Space” Winner.  Today, we’re so excited to share our completed design. But first, a little background…

Prelude to the Design:

On a Friday morning in April, we opened our email and found a fun surprise.  Dean Toney of heavystyle had announced the winner of our joint giveaway called “Style My Space”.  Here’s what the winner – Jill – had to say:

“While I live and work in NYC and have worked in fashion for the past nine years, my sense of style (unfortunately) does not translate to a talent for home decor!  I know what I like when I see it, but putting a room together like the girls at Little Crown is a talent that far exceeds my abilities.  My husband works in finance so he’s no help in all seriousness, I absolutely love what they’ve done with the nurseries I’ve seen in their portfolio, and it would be very cool to see what they could do with the space in our loft!  We’re not going to find out the sex of the baby, so it would be an exciting challenge to get their input on how to design a fantastic, gender neutral room that suits our taste (sleek and modern but very baby friendly!).”

The email was both flattering and exciting, especially as we love a good challenge.  A gender neutral nursery definitely requires a special level of care, which we love to give!  Plus, designing a complete nursery for a client outside of Southern California is a specialty of ours that we love to use.

You’re going to paint it what colour??!!

9 times out of 10, the words “gender neutral” bring to mind visions of mild yellows, and subdued greens.  But this time is totally different.  With input from Jill about her style (and existing paint colour in the space), we came up with the colour palette, which could not be more unique.  Believe it or not, we have found a way to make these unconventional colours both coordinate beautifully, and truly provide a space in which Jill’s baby could comfortably reside, never knowing that this room was designed without knowing the gender.

Putting the Pieces Together

As we showed in the earlier posts, the modern design called for sleek furniture, and the gender neutral theme required a measure of caution.

The big picture

As nursery interior designers, there’s always a moment where we look at the design and say to ourselves “what is it that makes this amazing”?  In this case, the off-beat colour scheme was our go-to answer, but what really “made” it for us was the skyline wall decal.  It’s sophisticated, and modern, but let’s be honest – it’s super kid-friendly.  We imaging this child playing in their room: one day pretending they’re in Paris making crepes for breakfast, the next pretending they’re in a far away city gathering treasures to bring home to Mom and Dad.

Without further ado, here are our computer models of Jill’s room

Closing Our Laptops

Our work on this nursery interior design project is done, but Jill’s has just begun… Our hope for these expecting parents is that they enjoy every moment of putting the nursery together: that they will laugh while painting, marvel at the difficulty that even very smart people experience while building a crib, and dream about the memories they will build with their son or daughter over years to come in this very room.  And, of course, we hope she will send finished photos, which we will gladly share with all of you.

Sleek Designs

Thanks again, Naomi and Gerri, for your amazing designs and practical tips.  We hope to continue to learn from you both in the future!  Special thanks to Jill Stein for allowing us to tag along in the process!
